23 Oct Emails Regarding “Maran, The Life & Scholarship of Hacham Ovadia Yosef”
In the past few weeks I have received thankfully dozens of emails from literally around the world regarding the new book Maran, The Life & Scholarship of Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Most recently I received a wonderful email form a friend Adele Chabot about her personal book review which she shared with me. After a few requests to share a book review here on Facebook well this is the most befitting one that I would like to share.
“My sister brought me your book the second half of the holiday. When she gave me the package, I eagerly tore it open and then went around and showed it around the house to my whole family, to make them jealous (which they were) and they all asked to read it when I was done. (Anytime I left the book on the table, I’d walk back into the room and see one of my parents or siblings reading a chapter)
My goal was to finish it by the end of sukkot but I didn’t have enough days. I am up to pg. 531 so I’m almost done.
Yehuda, I absolutely loveeee your book! It is so well-written and so well-researched. I loved how in the footnotes you even write if the story might have more than one version. I like how you organized it. It is very easy reading and very interesting. You also wrote it in a way that makes it easy to remember. If someone asked me to tell them about Maran right now, I could easily come up with a whole essay from memory without having to look back in the book.
I know you wrote this book so people will be inspired from Hacham Ovadia’s life. I definitely find it inspiring. You wrote in the book that Hacham Ovadia was disappointed how there is not so much work on memorization in schools these days. You also wrote a story which I loved, about a guy that asked for a segulah for a good memory, and Hacham Ovadia told him you need to repeat things over and over and over.
On that note, and being that I’m in a position to influence kids, I decided that I am going to help my students memorize many more pesukim from the Torah than I have in the past. My goal is to have them remember the first pasuk of every parasha. I think this goal is very achievable. My students know taamim so it’s easier to remember. I am going to have them repeat the pesukim over and over during the day and throughout the week until they eventually memorize it.
I am going to tell my students about this new goal tomorrow and was going to introduce it by talking about Hacham Ovadia and how much Torah we knew.
I think they will be really excited to do it. They love Torah.
Thank you for writing such a beautiful book. Can’t wait to finish it and pass it on.
Hazak U’Baruch.”
Sincerely,
Adele Chabot
